Ingredients

For the Cake:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour – This is the base of the cake so go with something simple and reliable.
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar – Sweetness is key and this sugar is going to give you that perfect, soft texture.
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder – This is what makes it rich and chocolatey just like how a Hagrid-approved cake should be.
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder – This helps the cake rise and gives it a light airy texture.
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda – Extra lift and lightness—because we want this cake to fluff up!
  • 1 teaspoon salt – To balance the sweetness and enhance the chocolate flavor.
  • 2 large eggs – They help bind everything together and give the cake structure.
  • 1 cup buttermilk – If you don't have buttermilk don't stress! Just add a tablespoon of lemon juice to regular milk, and you'll get the same effect.
  • ½ cup vegetable oil – For moisture. We want a cake that’s soft and tender.
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract – This will add depth to the flavor of the chocolate and just make everything smell heavenly.
  • 1 cup boiling water – This might seem unusual but it creates a super moist cake with a lovely, sticky texture. Trust me, it’s worth it.

For the Buttercream Frosting:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened – Butter is the base of buttercream, and it needs to be soft so you can whip it into fluffiness.
  • 4 cups powdered sugar – This gives us the sweetness and texture we need for that perfect frosting.
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract – For flavor because frosting without vanilla is just... not the same.
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream – This makes the frosting rich and smooth just like a magical potion.
  • Pinch of salt – To balance out the sweetness and make the frosting taste even better.

For Decorating:

  • Pink food coloring – We’re going for a Hagrid-style rustic charm but let’s not forget that splash of fun. Pink is the perfect color to make this cake pop.
  • Green food coloring – This will help us achieve that beautiful touch of Hogwarts house green or even just a nod to the wizarding world!
  • Gold star sprinkles or edible glitter optional – If you’re feeling extra magical, add a little sparkle to your cake—nothing says "wizarding world" like a little glitter.

Tools You'll Need:

  • 2 round cake pans 9-inch – These will give us the perfect size for each cake layer.
  • Mixing bowls – You’ll need a few to separate the dry ingredients and wet ingredients.
  • Electric mixer – If you have one it’ll save you a lot of time. But a hand mixer or even a whisk will work just fine!
  • Spatula – For spreading that frosting like a pro.
  • Cake decorating tools – If you have them like piping bags and tips, great! But don’t worry—simple frosting with a spatula works just as well.

Instructions

Step 1: Get the Oven Ready and Prep the Cake Pans

  • Begin by setting your oven to 350°F (175°C) to warm up. While the oven heats, grease your cake pans and line them with a sheet of parchment paper. This makes it easier to remove the cakes once they’re done baking and helps prevent them from sticking.

Step 2: Mix the Wet Ingredients

  • In a large bowl, combine your eggs, sugar, and buttermilk. Whisk them together until smooth. Now, add the vegetable oil and vanilla extract, and mix again. The oil gives the cake moisture, while the vanilla adds a nice, comforting flavor.

Step 3: Add the Dry Ingredients

  • In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Slowly add the dry mixture into the wet ingredients, mixing gently until everything is well incorporated. You don’t want to overmix, just enough to combine the ingredients into a smooth batter.

Step 4: Pour into Pans and Bake

  • Divide your batter evenly between the prepared pans. Pop them into the oven and bake for about 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. If you’re using multiple layers, just make sure to check the cake’s doneness with a toothpick. Once done, let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 5: Make the Frosting

  • As the cakes cool down, take the time to prepare your frosting. This way, you’ll be ready to frost them as soon as they’re fully set. In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until it’s nice and creamy. Gradually add in the powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Mix until the frosting is smooth, and then add a little milk if it needs to reach a spreadable consistency.

Step 6: Assemble and Decorate

  • When the cakes are completely cool, set one layer on a cake plate. Spread a generous amount of frosting over the top, then add the second cake layer. Frost the top and sides of the cake, smoothing it out as you go. Now for the fun part—decorate! Whether you’re going for a Hogwarts-inspired design, adding little edible decorations, or just keeping it simple with a nice border, let your imagination run wild. You could even use edible gold dust or a wand-shaped cake topper for that extra Harry Potter magic!
